YouTube Video Mashup Proposal
I do have two ideas on which I want to get feedback.
The first idea is to research the idea of feminism in our culture. Not the "capital F" Feminsim, but the more generic idea, such as what feminism should be. If you've read my last blog post, you'd know that I am not a fan of Feminists and the way they go about trying to convey their message. I want to convey what my idea of feminism is, which is not women's rights, but equal rights. I feel that men AND women deserve the exact same rights (or the equivalent. I understand there are some things which can only be for women and others only for men), yet many feminists seem like they want the right to do something, yet when they are judged for that (negatively or positively), they get in an uproar. Equal rights go both ways, and I want to show that in my mashup. The second idea is the idea that not every bad person is wholly bad. I got the idea from a member of the class, but I want to take it to a whole additional level. I want to show the goodness in those who might be considered completely evil. I want to show the other side of the story. I want to show that people are not inherently good or evil, but more a mixture of both. The other person in my group mentioned Scar from The Lion King and Loki from Avengers, but I also want to do Malekith from Thor: The Dark World, Voldemort from the Harry Potter series, Senator Kelly and Stryker from X-Men/X-Men 2, and others. I also want to show how some supposedly good characters within those realms are not wholly good. They would be Thor, Odin, Harry Potter, and the X-Men., among others. |

PROPOSAL UPDATE!!
The idea which I have settled on is the "villain/hero" idea. I want to show how not all heroes are completely good and not all villains are completely evil. For example, Loki is a product of his upbringing. Even in the mythology which the Marvel version is based on, Loki helps the Aesir with their various missions, yet he will also sabotage them. However, on the other side, Thor is often seen as a great hero, though he often does questionable things which can be seen as bad. I also want to show Malekith as a sympathetic character, because he things what he is doing is the right thing, and it caused him to lose his wife and children, which made him even more determined.
Another pairing I wish to do is from the Lion King, which includes Mufasa and Scar/The Hyenas. Mufasa is often seen as good, yet we hear Scar say "Stick with me, and you'll never go hungry again." I want to focus on the "again" part, because it shows that they were allowed to go hungry, which may have been the reason for the Hyenas going to the bad side. Another example of a villain who may not be wholly evil is Voldemort from the Harry Potter series, while Harry himself is not a completely good character. Senator Kelly and Stryker from X-Men/X-Men 2 do evil things because they feel that they are trying to protect their families and humans, where the mutants try to be good but occasionally do bad things. The song I have picked out for the mashup is called Confutatis Maledictis (Final), which is a piece by Mozart and is supposedly part of a requiem mass. I thought it was apt because the operatic voices sing the lines: Confutatis maledictis, flammis acribus addictis, voca me cum benedictus. Oro supplex et acclinis, cor contritum quasi cinis, gere curam mei finis Which translates to: When the accused are confounded, and doomed to flames of woe, call me among the blessed. I kneel with submissive heart, my contrition is like ashes, help me in my final condition. I felt that this would be good because of the idea of good and evil within the song, but also because of the feeling and mood which the music evokes. |
